The Lying Doctor

Imagine this…

A doctor knows that a patient has a serious disease and may die, but telling the patient will make them really sad and may cause them to give up hope.

The doctor can lie to the patient and reduce the intensity of the disease in his narrative to the patient.

However doing this will prevent the patient from seeking treatment elsewhere that could save their life and also allow the patient and their loved ones to be mentally ready for the patient’s death.

Should the doctor tell the truth as is, or should he tone down the seriousness of the situation?
